A carpenter or chippie carries out a range of work on a site, to include
- building stud partitions
- building door frames
- hanging doors
- roof work
- installing timber windows
- fitting skirting boards
- fitting saddle boards
- fitting dado rails
- fitting picture rails
- fitting locks and door furniture
There are a number of tasks that would come under the first fix stage and then again some of the tasks would be considered second fix.
Terms associated with carpenters would be joiners, chippies or cabinet-makers. Each carries out a different type of work with cabinet makers trained in the specialist craft of furniture making, whether building a made to measure bespoke kitchen or items of contemporary or traditional furniture.
Joiners or chippies are more hands-on at the construction area, whether fitting a timber floor or fitting a staircase, building a cut roof or fitting roof trusses. Most builders and building contractors started out on site working as carpenters.
