Grants are available for some upgrading works.  The SEI currently run a number of grant schemes including

These grant schemes are aimed at the domestic market but there are also grants available for commercial premises along with R&D grants for alternative energy which as we all are aware is going to be a very big growth area into the future.

While grants go some way towards the initial outlay with upgrade works there is a benefit going forward to you the householder.  Apart from the obvious benefit of living in a warmer, more comfortable home there are financial benefits to be made going forward. 

A simple thing like replacing light bulbs for more energy efficient lighting will repay in saved energy and reduced energy costs.
